Distributed (Private) Generation

Distributed Generation means equipment used for generating electricity which is connected to a distribution network (i.e. Horizon Energy’s electricity network) and is also capable of injecting electricity back into that distribution network.

For example wind turbines, solar panels, hydro turbines, geothermal heat and diesel or gas turbines. Distributed generation can be used to generate electricity for your home, farm or business.

The Electricity Governance (Connection of Distributed Generation) Regulations 2007 (the “Regulations”) govern the connection of distributed generation to Horizon Energy’s network. If you are considering connecting distributed generation to our network, please read through the connection and operation standards which we have prepared in accordance with the Regulations.  Contact us if you wish to discuss your situation further.

Distributed generation with capacity of less than 10 kilowatts

The following connection and operation standards will apply if you wish to generate your own electricity on-site via a small scale (10 kilowatts or less) generator connected to Horizon Energy’s network:

If you have read the above policy documents and you wish to apply to have distributed generation with a capacity of 10 kilowatts or less connected to Horizon Energy’s network, please complete our application form. Send it to us together with the application fee and all of the information and supporting documentation specified in the application form.

We will follow the process and timelines set out in the Horizon Energy Distributed Generation (<10kW) Policy in considering and responding to your application.

Distributed generation with capacity of 10 kilowatts or more

The following connection and operation standards outline the process and requirements for installing distributed generation with capacity of above 10 kilowatts on Horizon Energy’s network.   In all cases Horizon Energy encourages you to contact us as soon as possible so that we can assist you in complying with the requirements for connection.

If you have read the above policy documents and you wish to make an initial application to have distributed generation with a capacity of above 10 kilowatts connected to Horizon Energy’s network, please complete the initial application form.  Send it to us together with the application fee and all of the information and supporting documentation specified in the initial application form.

We will follow the process and timelines set out in the Horizon Energy Distributed Generation (>10kW) Policy in considering and responding to your initial application. You must make a final application within 12 months after receipt of the information from Horizon Energy if you intend to proceed to connect to our network.
